Class Description: Ready to let a little color back into your scrapbooking? Then join us for a hands-on class that proves color doesn’t have to be overwhelming! First, we’ll start with a burst of color with fresh, fabulous new Paper Pizazz®. Then we’ll get attached with the newest line of scrapbooking treasures from Hot Off The Press…including printed ribbons, patterned frames and vinyl tags. You’ll complete one birthday-themed layout in class and leave with dozens of new ideas.

Class Intro:
About Attachments™: This is a brand-new line of fresh, fun and colorful themed embellishments. Each theme includes:

  • Ribbon Words: Grosgrain ribbon printed with themed words. Perfect for borders!
  • Vinyl Tags: Cool vinyl tags printed with words. Cut them apart or leave them whole. Attach with the enclosed silver ball-and-chain.
  • Frames: Nested patterned paper frames—frame a photo, word or image.
  • Ribbon Set: Three coordinating ribbons like gingham, grosgrain and rickrack. Use to accent photos, make borders, add bows and so much more.
  • Pocket: A real fabric pocket to hold journaling, memorabilia, notes and more!

Each embellishment retails for $2.49.

Teaching Techniques:
Using Patterned Papers: Think a brightly colored pattern will overwhelm your photo? The key is to mat your photos before placing them onto a patterned sheet. Notice how the large photo is matted on red and white solid papers; the smaller photo has a checked frame, but there’s a thin white border separating the photo from the check pattern.

Combining Patterned Papers: One pattern might be easy to use, but what about two? Or three? Here we’ve got a large stitched swirl paper, a stripe and a red gingham check. How do they all work together? Red and yellow are both high-energy—but notice that the yellow is a muted shade, not a bright yellow. (A “shade” is a color with black added to it.) The red is also fairly muted and dominates the page. Being a darker shade of red, it recedes rather than pops out. The swirl and the stripe paper both have tints of red (a “tint” of a color is made by adding white) that coordinates with the red solid without competing. And because the stripe and the swirl are made to coordinate, you know they can mix and match without clashing. We’ve chosen two papers from the Fresh Citrus sarapapers™.

Adding Touches of Color: The red and white embellishments are a fun way to add color and texture to the page. Starting at the top right of the page, notice the checked frame around the photo—this is a simple punch-apart frame. A bit of red grosgrain ribbon is simply tied around the frame before it’s placed on the photo. A red and white gingham bow decorates the journaling, too—this is a simple knot attached with a Zot™. The printed ribbon border is in the perfect color combination of red and yellow, and easily slides through another of the patterned frames.

Adding Journaling Words:

We’ve used part of a vinyl tag and a few pieces from the Birthday Frames pack—but not all—for this page.

Supplies:

Instructions:

  1. Cut a 5”x12” strip of yellow swirl paper and glue it to the left side of the red cardstock background paper. Attach one end of a 12 1/2”-long piece of words ribbon to the back side of the red cardstock, securing it with tape. Before attaching the other end to the back of the cardstock, thread the small polka dot paper frame onto the ribbon and glue it to the page.
  2. Place a photo behind the gingham paper frame and tie a 3” grosgrain ribbon length around the frame. (Be sure to trim the ends of the ribbon at an angle to prevent fraying.) Mat the frame on stripe paper, then on white cardstock.
  3. Glue a 1/4”-wide strip of striped paper across the bottom of the remaining photo and mat with red and white cardstock. Knot a 3” length of ribbon and trim the tails to 1/2” long. Glue the knot to the paper strip as shown. Attach the photos to the page as shown.
  4. Cut the words “cake”, “gifts” and “it’s your day” from the vinyl tag. Glue “cake” and “gifts” to the rectangle centers from the paper frames. Glue knotted 2” gingham ribbon lengths above each as shown. Punch holes in the “it’s your day” fragment and mount below the photo with yellow brads.
  5. Journal onto white paper. Glue a 3/4” wide strip of the striped paper on the journaling as shown. Trim the paper evenly with the journaling sides. Mat on red cardstock, then on yellow swirl paper, then a third time on white cardstock. Punch holes at the top corners and insert the red mini brads. Knot a 2” length of gingham ribbon and glue the knot under the journaling as shown. Glue the journaling to the page as shown.

Class prep tips: Teachers, we recommend splitting the ribbon packs apart for class use, but build the cost of the Birthday Frames and Birthday Vinyl Tag into the cost of the class. When you buy three of the same item from Hot Off The Press, you pay wholesale of 50% off retail, making each Attachment™ $1.25. When using tools like hole punches, place the items at each seat or have students share.

Class sales tips: As a teacher, your job is to instruct—and to sell students on additional materials. Be sure to point out the different themes available in the Attachments™ line, and remind students that they are acid-free and the colors are made to coordinate with each other. (Yes, they might have red ribbon at home, but it might not match the frames and tag from the Attachments™ line.) Make sure all the Attachments™ are merchandised together in the store, at least for that evening. It makes shopping easier for the student and guarantees they’ll buy more.

Working with the retailer: Of course, you’ll want to make sure the retailer has plenty of Attachments™ in stock because students will want to buy additional themes. Show different themes in class while students are cutting and assembling.

Love the creative possibilities of Attachments™? Be sure to check out all the available themes!
