Joy & Delights
By Shauna Berglund-Immel

Want to pump up your handmade cards with extra dimension? Shauna asks. Overlays are a great way to add fun dimension to your cards, and you can choose to emphasize the overlay or allow it to blend into your project just by selecting the right paper or pattern to put behind the overlay. On this Joy & Delights card, I featured a fun card quote in the center of a slide mount, then layered a solid cardstock behind the overlay so the quote still shows up well and isnt lost on the mixture of patterned papers layered under the slide mount. While the printed portion of the overlay is opaque, its not entirely opaque, so layering an overlay on top of a lightly patterned paper will cause the overlay to blend into the project more as the pattern slightly shows through the overlay.

Instructions
For the Card Front:
- Ink the edges of the blank card with black and turn the card so the fold runs along the top edge. Cut a 6 1/8x 4 5/8 piece of purple words paper with the words reading horizontally, then ink the edges with black. Mat on aqua linen paper, trimming the mat to 1/16 and ink the edges with black. Glue centered on the card front and use a black pen to add faux zigzag stitching to the top left and bottom right corners, as shown. Add one lime, one yellow and one purple mini brad vertically down the bottom left and top right corners of the purple words paper.
- Cut a 2 wide strip of purple uneven lines paper and ink the edges. Use a black pen to add faux stitching along each of the each of the long edges. Mat the long edges on lime textured paper, then trim the mats to 1/16 and ink the edges. Glue vertically 3/4 in from the left edge of the card, trimming the excess paper even with the top and bottom edges of the card.
- Cover one super-size slide mount with lime textured paper and ink the edges. Use a black pen to add faux stitching along the outside and inside edges of the slide mount that matches the pen work on the purple uneven lines paper. Cut out the overlay quote and glue it behind the slide mount, framing the quote in the window. Add a layer of ivory cardstock behind the overlay, trimming the excess cardstock even with the edges of the slide mount. Cut a 5 length of aqua grosgrain ribbon and tie a knot in the center. Wrap the ribbon diagonally around the top left corner of the slide mount, wrapping the ends around the edges to secure on the back. Attach the slide mount centered on the card front with foam tape.
- Cut out the fun word fragment overlay and the aqua/purple tag with the yellow circular center. Use purple mini brads to attach the overlay at an angle across the tag. Cut a 2 1/2 length of aqua grosgrain ribbon and fold it in half. Secure the loose ends behind the top of the tag with one lime mini brad, then use foam tape to secure the tag at an angle in the bottom right corner of the slide mount.
For the Inside of the Card:
- Cut a 3 1/2x5 piece of purple uneven lines paper and ink the edges with black. Mat the long right edge on lime textured paper, trim the mat to 1/16 and ink the edge with black. Glue flush against the left edge of the card inside. Use a black pen to add faux zigzag stitching down the right edge of the paper piece.
- Cut out the happy and birthday word fragment overlays and the fun tile artwork. Use lime, yellow, purple and teal mini brads to attach the word fragments and the tile in the bottom right corner of the inside of the card, as shown.
Thank You
By LeNae Gerig

When working with clear materials, sometimes it can be difficult to figure out just how to attach the material to your project, says LeNae. Since overlays are clear, applying a glue stick all over the back of the overlay will cause the glue to show through the clear material when you add it to your project. Brads, clips and staples are a great substitute to adhesive, but if you really want to use your glue stick, heres a tip: Apply just a small amount of adhesive behind the printed parts of the overlay. On the frosted overlays, a layer of opaque white is printed first and the other colors are printed on top of the white layer. The white layer causes the colors layered on top of it to be more opaque, letting the color hide small amounts of adhesive. Remember: A little glue goes a long way!
