Shauna Technique #1: Photo Tinting One Element

“To give some of my pages a really artsy look and to highlight an object in the photograph, I like to copy my color photos to black and white and then use photo tinting pens or chalk to color them,” says Shauna. “Black and white photos go with everything.”

Here, Shauna chose purple and pink photo tinting pens to tint Elise’s hat and suit in the same tones as the papers. Yes, you can get similar results using a computer program to manipulate colors, but Shauna prefers the artsier, hand-tinted effect. Note how Shauna kept the focus of the page on these photos, but still accented the layout with embellishments: beaded photo corners, silver charms, spiral paper clips and embossed paper word charms.

Shauna Technique #2: Using Alphabet Tiles

Sure, this page would have looked just fine if Shauna had simply typed all of her journaling, but instead, she chose to make the quote stand out on her page by mixing different fonts (and font sizes). The result? Variety, interest and color!

“I often use only one photo,” says Shauna. “Sometimes I only have one photo of an event because the others didn’t turn out, or I was too busy enjoying the event that I didn’t take many photographs. I also love the look of one photo. There is no question of what the focus is. It also allows me more room to use embellishments and to journal.”

Shauna Technique #3: Distressing

A distressed, shabby chic effect is a hot scrapbooking trend right now—one easy way to get this look is to distress vellum. Simply wet it slightly, then crumple it into a ball. Spread it out to dry; this will avoid the crackling and tearing and will give it an overall softer look.

“I rolled the edges when the vellum was still wet, because that’s when it’s the most pliable. I tore the hole in the vellum center just enough to frame the photo, then tore some holes in the vellum to showcase some pre-printed snowflakes.”

Shauna Technique #4: Peek-a-boo Windows

One of Shauna’s signature layouts involves the peek-a-boo window: a window shape cut out of a piece of vellum, then placed over the photo to frame a focal part of the photograph. Here, the window frames pal and fellow designer Paris Dukes, with some extra room above her to capture the snow-capped peaks.

“Peek-a-boo windows look great with scenery photos,” says Shauna, who chose white vellum to contrast the patterned papers. (Hint: Peek-a-boo windows also “hide” a crowded or messy background in a photo!)
